Today marks the three-year anniversary of President Ndayishimiye’s assumption of power. It seems as though time has flown by since the 2020 elections, which were expedited due to certain circumstances and the passing of former President Pierre Nkurunziza, “sogo” as “they” say.

As the dawn breaks, I find myself immersed in my customary routine. Instead of indulging in a morning Kirundi poem, I opt for a glimpse into the latest news, refraining from early morning indulgences. With the clock striking 7, I delve into the realm of WhatsApp, where gossip reigns supreme. This virtual tapestry weaves together truths, half-truths, and the occasional wild rumour. Burundians, being adept storytellers, are captivated by these tales (even if some may ultimately prove to be mere fabrications). I know you remember the Gitega case: “Arthur has been found with BIF 14 billion”.

“Hail the third anniversary, #Nevawacu!” resound the celebratory status updates. I, too, am caught up in the chorus of well-wishers. Three years have passed already? It’s truly remarkable, considering President Ndayishimiye took the oath of office just back in 2020. How did this realization elude me until today? Perhaps the capricious London weather has been playing tricks on my mind (after all, summer rains can be quite misleading).

Now, let us turn our attention to the accomplishments of President Ndayishimiye’s administration over the past three years.

Over the course of three years, President Ndayishimiye’s administration has propelled Burundi forward, leaving a significant mark on the nation’s economic development, citizen welfare, and regional cooperation. With a steadfast focus on pivotal sectors like agriculture, infrastructure, and tourism, the government’s policies have fortified the economy, attracting foreign investments and cultivating agricultural productivity.

Under President Ndayishimiye’s astute leadership, social programs aimed at enhancing healthcare, education, and social protection have persisted, yielding tangible improvements in the lives of countless Burundians. Sustained access to free maternal healthcare and ongoing investments in education have proven instrumental in uplifting communities throughout the country.

Recognizing the critical role of infrastructure in propelling economic growth, the administration has embarked on ambitious projects, expanding road networks with memorable initiatives such as DUKUNDANE “the man,” ensuring broader access to electricity through the efforts of Albert “the major,” and enhancing water supply systems. These endeavours have fostered enhanced connectivity and raised living standards, painting a brighter picture for communities nationwide.

President Ndayishimiye’s proactive approach in cultivating regional and international partnerships has effectively projected Burundi’s interests onto the global stage. Through skilful diplomacy, the government has fostered cooperation, attracted investments, and paved the way for local businesses to flourish in a competitive landscape.

Moreover, President Ndayishimiye has placed paramount importance on peace, security, and reconciliation. His unwavering commitment to maintaining stability, promoting unity, and addressing conflicts has resonated with Burundians. Notably, his advocacy for youth empowerment within the African Union has earned him recognition as a resolute advocate for the youth peace and security agenda. Eagerly, Burundi’s youth anticipate further strides, eagerly competing with their counterparts across East Africa, as demonstrated by the prestigious incredible innovation awards.

The recent chairmanship of the East African Community has bolstered President Ndayishimiye’s regional influence. Gitega has emerged as the host city for numerous summits, underscoring Burundi’s unwavering commitment to regional collaboration and its instrumental role in shaping the future of East Africa.

As we commemorate President Ndayishimiye’s three-year tenure, it is imperative to acknowledge the milestones achieved thus far while remaining cognizant of the expectations that lie ahead. The journey has showcased progress, yet Burundians anticipate the fulfilment of the remaining promises. Through unwavering dedication and united efforts, the prospect of a prosperous tomorrow remains well within reach for all citizens.
