Burundi takes a bold step in diplomacy

Published

Burundi has a long and complicated history with diplomacy. The country has been plagued by civil war and political instability in recent decades, and its relations with its neighbours have been strained. However, in recent years, there has been a positive shift in Burundi’s diplomatic landscape.

One of the first things that Ndayishimiye did was to reach out to his neighbours. He met with the leaders of Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and South Africa to discuss regional issues. He also worked to improve relations with the international community.

Visiting many countries, some analysts said he was overspending on his visits, as the country’s economic situation was decreasing.

But, let’s also remind that Burundi’s economy has grown at an average rate of 5% per year over the past five years. This growth has helped to improve the lives of ordinary Burundians, and it has also made the country more attractive to foreign investors. but recent events showed a different perspective.

Ndayishimiye’s efforts have paid off. In May 2023, Burundi hosted the 11th Summit of the Regional Follow-up Mechanism (#ROM) of the ADDIS-ABEBA Framework Agreement for Peace, Security, and Cooperation for the Democratic Republic of Congo and the region. This was a significant event for Burundi, as it showed the country’s commitment to peace and security in the region.

The progress that Burundi has made in diplomacy is encouraging. The country has a long way to go, but it is moving in the right direction. With continued effort, Burundi can achieve lasting peace and stability.
